Biography

Mom’s Command won her career debut on July 17, 1984, in the Faneuil Miss Stakes at New Hampshire's Rockingham Park at odds of 44-1. A new star had unexpectedly arrived on the scene. With 10 more stakes victories in her career, including five Grade 1 wins, Mom’s Command established herself as one of the top fillies of the 1980s.

Bred in Kentucky by Peter Fuller, Mom’s Command was a bright chestnut daughter of Top Command out of the Pia Star mare Star Mommy. She was trained by Edward T. Allard and ridden in all but two of her races by Abigail Fuller, the owner’s daughter. All of her 16 career starts were in stakes races.

After winning the Faneuil Miss Stakes, Mom’s Command won the Priscilla Stakes at Suffolk Downs, the Astarita Stakes at Belmont Park, and the Selima Stakes at Laurel Park to establish herself as one of the top juvenile fillies in the country.

As a 3-year-old in 1985, Mom’s Command won her seasonal debut in the Flirtation Stakes at Pimlico before finishing second in the Goldfinch Handicap at Garden State. She then went on a five-race win streak, including a sweep of the New York Filly Triple Crown — the Grade 1 trio of the Acorn, Mother Goose, and Coaching Club American Oaks. Mom’s Command became the sixth filly to complete the prestigious sweep, joining Hall of Famers Dark Mirage (1968), Shuvee (1969), Chris Evert (1974), Ruffian (1975), and Davona Dale (1979).

Following the Coaching Club American Oaks victory, Mom’s Command finished second in the Test Stakes to Lady’s Secret. She returned to her winning ways by taking the Alabama Stakes nine days after the Test.

While training for the Rare Perfume Stakes in September of 1985, Mom’s Command injured an ankle and was subsequently retired with a career record of 11-2-1 from 16 starts and earnings of $909,972. She won the 1985 Eclipse Award for Champion 3-Year-Old Filly.

Mom’s Command died at the age of 25 at Fuller’s Runnymede Farm in North Hampton, New Hampshire, on Feb. 3, 2007.
