Biography

Bold ’n Determined was a precocious 2-year-old, winning all four of her starts in 1979. She went on to win from coast to coast as a sophomore and continued her excellence in the handicap ranks as a 4-year-old.

A daughter of Bold and Brave out of the Determine mare Pidi, Bold ’n Determine was campaigned by Saron Stable and trained by Hall of Famer Neil Drysdale. As a 2-year-old, Bold ’n Determined won her debut in the spring of 1979 at Hollywood Park. She added a victory in the Oak Leaf Stakes and finished her season undefeated with earnings of $108,240.

At 3, Bold ’n Determined won six Grade 1 races, including two-thirds of the New York Filly Triple Crown — the Acorn Stakes at a mile and the Coaching Club American Oaks at 1½ miles. She also won the Kentucky Oaks, Fantasy Stakes, Santa Susana Stakes, and Spinster Stakes. In a thrilling running of the Maskette Stakes, Bold ’n Determined defeated Kentucky Derby winner Genuine Risk by a nose. Her overall record as a 3-year-old was 9-1-0 from 12 starts with earnings of $643,303.

Returning to the races as a 4-year-old in 1981, Bold ’n Determined added victories in the Bewitch Stakes and Apple Blossom Handicap before ankle trouble forced her retirement with a career mark of 16-2-0 from 20 starts and earnings of $949,599.

Bold ’n Determined died in 1997 at the age of 20 at Gainsborough Farm near Lexington, Kentucky.
