Paintings from the Charles H. Thieriot Collection
On display in the McBean Gallery
The Charles H. Thieriot collection includes seven extraordinary British racing paintings by three important nineteenth century artists, John Ferneley, Sr. (1782-1860), John Frederick Herring, Sr. (1795-1865), and James Pollard (1797-1859). While these paintings are only a portion of the original collection, they reveal Charles Thieriot, Senior’s interest in sporting paintings documenting significant events. Charles Thieriot’s son, who carried his father’s name and his interest in equine art, bequeathed these works to the Museum. These paintings provided snapshots of great moments in racing, such as a race won at Chester by the famous jockey Nat Flatman. They vividly illustrate what race days were really like: the crowds, the ornate architecture of the stands, and even advertisements. By placing an emphasis on documentation and detail, the artists provide us with a privileged glimpse of the nineteenth century British gentry and what they wanted to remember most form a day at the races.
