Post-Civil War Gallery
The Post-Civil War Gallery tells the story of the expansion of American thoroughbred racing after the Civil War. The rules of racing were formalized through the formation of regional regulatory groups, and wagering became more prominent. Shortly after 1900, a widespread backlash to gambling resulted in racing’s suspension and was followed by a significant decline in the number of tracks.
James McLaughlin by C. C. Markham is back on view in our Post Civil War Gallery. A special thank you to conservation supporter Annie Johnson.
