   William Molter was born in Fredericksburg, Texas in 1910. He enjoyed success as a jockey before turning to training. He was the leading rider at Tanforan twice and rode five winners in one day in Canada.

   Molter saddled 18 winners during his first full year as a trainer in 1938, and won his first stakes race in 1945 when High Resolve captured the San Diego Handicap at Del Mar. Molter won 2,160 races in his career, including 179 stakes races. He had career earnings of $11,983,635. Molter led all trainers in wins in four consecutive years (1946-1949) and in money won four times (1954, 1956, 1958, and 1959).

   Molter’s best horse was 1958 Horse of the Year Round Table, who won of 43 of his 66 starts, including 27 stakes wins. Molter won 16 stakes with Determine, 12 with Imbros, 11 with On Trust, and 10 with Bobby Brocato.

   Notable races won by Molter horses include the Kentucky Derby, Santa Anita Derby (2), Bing Crosby Handicap, Hollywood Gold Cup (2), Del Mar Handicap, San Felipe Stakes (3), San Gabriel Handicap (3), Malibu Stakes (3), Carter Handicap, Santa Anita Handicap (2), American Derby, Blue Grass Stakes, Arlington Handicap (2), Gulfstream Park Handicap, San Antonio Handicap, and Manhattan Handicap.

   William Molter was inducted into the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 1960.
